PDM is a technology of the past, CPD is the future

If you have more than one engineer in your company then you’ve had to figure out a way to manage CAD files. If you have a lot of engineers you’ve probably looked at tools like Product Data Management (PDM) or Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems. And chances are when you looked at these solutions, you noticed too many problems.

Specifically, PDM and PLM don’t work the way you do. We think there’s a better way, and we’re calling it “Collaborative Product Development” (CPD).

What’s new in Workbench: The reliability of Product Data Management (PDM) without the cost, complexity and exclusivity

It's time to check back in on all of the cool new feature releases we've pushed your way over the last month. And what a month it’s been!  This week we announced new functionalities in Workbench launching it as the premier Collaborative Product Development solution. What’s that mean? Let’s take a look.

New Workbench Features And Desktop App Make CAD File Management Easy

More than 15,000 people have signed up for Workbench since we launched it in June.  We’ve heard a lot of stories from people who are using Workbench to share CAD with vendors, with customers and clients, and with non-CAD users in their organization.  For many engineers, Workbench has made it easy to get partners involved in the design process. Today we’re happy to announce that we’re building on this success by adding a broad array of file management features to Workbench to make it easier to keep your design team on the same page.

Avoiding PDM/PLM: the lengths engineers go to

Over the past few months, we’ve talked to a lot of engineers about how they share engineering data (like CAD files).  The biggest takeaway is that most engineers don’t use a specialized system to manage their data. Either they don’t have a system or what they do have is incompatible with what their customers need. So how do over 60% of CAD users get by without a traditional Product Data Management (PDM) or Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) tool?

What Mechanical Engineers should require from file management tools

Last week I posted about the true cost of PDM solutions - a reality that prevents the majority of CAD users from using PDM at all. I also recently posted an interview I conducted with robotics hardware designer Matthieu Lapeyre. He made some interesting points about how frustrating it is that PDM solutions are lagging behind the file management tools of the software developers he collaborates with.

Today I’m breaking down what software guys like Matthieu’s colleagues and myself can’t live without in a file management tool - and mechanical engineers shouldn’t have to either.
