With over 140 entries, the SolidSmack Awesome Sauce Design Challenge received designs ranging from concept cars to hot, new ideas on consumer products. Take a look at how the contest came about and the winners who took home the prizes.
The contest was created to give designers and engineers a platform to explore their ideas without being constrained to a specific idea, product or industry. The theme of the project was tied loosely around the idea of inspiring young people to go on to innovate and create ideas of their own. Here are the results of the competition.
The Criteria
There were 4 sets of criteria that were evaluated for the design. With so many submitted, it was a challenge in itself to pick the 7 winners who took away $15,000 in prizes. The criteria for each model was based on Creativity, Quality, Sauciness and Manufacturability.
The Winners
There were seven prize packages given to the top seven entries chosen by judges from SolidSmack and the sponsors. The winners come from five continents around the world, from France to Maryland and Indonesia to Japan. And the types of designs cover ideas as broad as the distance between each. Have a look.

Conclusion
The challenge was an interesting exploration of what is possible when people are left to their imagination. In addition, everyone who entered the contest retained complete rights to their design. There is no doubt that some of 140+ designs submitted will go on to become actual products. GrabCAD is becoming more a place to promote innovation by allowing people to display their ideas and get feedback from other designers and engineers. The Awesome Sauce Contest made this even more apparent.
