Survey: What do you want to see in Solidworks 2013?

SolidWorks 2013 is about to be released – September 10th, actually. Solidworks is probably one of the most popular CAD tools among GrabCAD Engineers (actually, not probably, it is #1). A few of you have SolidWorks 2013 Beta, but can’t talk about what’s in store (oh NDAs …). But not everyone is in the dark – if you take a look at the SW blog there are a number little hints at what’s coming. We’re getting a little sneak peak of SW2013 this week and we thought we’d do a little survey. What do you want to see in Solidworks 2013? Add your thoughts in the comments thread!

I think a great addition would be a gear train design helper to calculate resulting speed and torque ratios, and axis distances, it should work in the assembly environment with the gears made with the toolbox.

What i expect to see, is a multi-core operation eventually!! I think its time to end these endless hours of rebuilding while having a couple of xeons on my workstation…

maybe the issue that SolidWorks 2013 has the ability to save as to older version format is true
so, we don’t waste the time to convert in .step or .iges format file

Juan Esteban Paz

Albertus I’m sorry to say that is nearly impossible to happen since they add new features on new versions there isnt a way that an older version can read or translate those features

Some level of intelligence to recognize modified parts edited outside the assembly, so that mates don’t go berserk once the same assembly is opened with the modified part. A set of fresh backgrounds and materials appearances in the PV, something more like Keyshot, capability to change drawing/line colors within the same drawing when making blocks… The list is rather long but…

They could make it where if you want to save in an older version it does not include the new features like Microsoft does with doc compared to docx files you may lose a little but if the part does not use the new features you should be able to save as an older format.

also when working with multibody sheet metal parts it would be great to have an option to link the flat patterns to reduce the number of features similar to the cutlist that groups every weldment profile that is made out of the same profile and dimensions

What’s the point? It’s out in 5 days!
The question should be ‘What do you expect to see in SolidWorks 2013′.

Another OS support by SW. Like mac. I am still dreaming of a Linux version…

Batch print integrated at the print dialog.

Optimistic?

Hello,
As we know Solid works is user friendly software, but not for touch screen, I use it in touchscreen and got many difficulties, I am old user of sw so I know it perfectly. Another thing sw12 is become to much artificial and not pure looking, I hope this will be more serious.

I would like to see a way to quickly toggle between backgrounds (gradient, plain, environment, etc.). I like to work on a darker background, because it’s easier on the eyes, but I frequently switch to white or environment for screenshots and visualization. It’s a hassle to change through the tool options menu.

Hello!

I think is time to see new surface modeling tools in SW.

SW is a very friendly CAD software but…

Let´s go design?

Sure?

I´m Acording with you Robert. I´m product designer and engineer and I´m tired and desperate to work with the actual stone age SW surface tools.
I was wishful to see T-Splines inside SW…

Some improvements in Photoview would be great. Even if you have the best workstation and graphic cards the rendering preview is a joke and we can´t share our material in the Luxology webside like Modo users. I think to have an integraded rendeing tool is a great idea but i think is not well done.

I also work with sheet metal a lot and would love to be able to export a whole assembly’s sheetmetal to flatpatterns into one document in one go. SW might be very capable already, but for its price, I feel that exporting flatpatterns for laser-cutting should be just a click away and included in SW.

I would like the little things cleaned up like;
being able to edit the sketch of a hole from a short-cut (like a boss or cut), adding relations to items in a sketch graphically (like midpoint), making errors more explicit rather than ‘error in sketch’, being able to mate all 3 planes of a part in an assembly in 1 command, being able to mirror parts in an assembly by 2 planes making 4 symmetrical parts.

It would be great if solidworks had tools for designing soft / flexible materials, ie fabrics, folded items. I work at a product development firm and we are seeing a lot of products using solely soft materials or a combination of soft and rigid.

@ a laforest, this can be done through the Solidworks Task Scheduler! Also saving batch drawings and alternate 3D formats can be done through the task scheduler as well. Hope this helps :)

Would love to have the ability to import and export to some of the 3d animation/drawing tools like maya, 3dsMax, poser, etc. This is so I can move objects more freely between the normal mech 3d cad and the animation cad used for large scale simulations and animations.

I would like to see a change of effects on a current assembly fucntion. Instead of highlighting the part or sub-assembly you select I would rather see it on it’s natural state and have the rest of the assembly fade. Like semi transparent. This will allow you to see the part or sub-assembly at any point and through other components. This would be AWESOME and also wishfull thinking….

one important request is to release a version compatible with 32 bit windows also.
as many users still have systems working on 32 bit windows.

1. I would like to see the ability to roll back to earlier versions of parts and assemblies. If you have a Mac, you know what I mean.

2. I would like to be able to lock a part or assembly so that it can’t be changed, so that only new configurations can be made.

3. Better rendering of transparent materials. If you have multiple transparent materials, like 4-5 sheets of glass, you have to increase render quality to avoid problems, but that leads to VERY long rendering times. A “dummy” glass material without refraction would help too.
