Seems like I'm not the only one who's not a big fan of those question marks that tell you that user hasn't attached a screenshot for their model in our CAD library. Adam Pohl responded by rendering a shot himself and offered it in the comments of this comparator stand and the whole thing sparked an interesting discussion.
How does the idea of wikification of GrabCAD sound? By that I mean that everyone could upload their renderings of any file, upload a version of the file in a different software and add tags to the file. The author of the file would still have the ability to reject all the additions but if these are good then there shouldn't be much reason for it.
If the file has no screenshot then the one uploaded by someone else would be set as the default shot. If the file already has something but another file is added then the author can decide to use the new shot as the default one.
How does the whole idea sound? Too crazy and no-one's keen on giving up control over their content? Or is there something in it and together we could raise the overall quality of the library?
What's in it for those offering better renderings, tags etc? As in every online community they'd get karma points but they'd also get a small note in their profile about all this "community service". And if I was looking for a contractor through our CAD services I might just ask for that guy who's doing all those kick ass photo realistic renderings.
