It’s been busy, busy times at GrabCAD office as our team has been working day and night towards our beta launch this week. We promise you, there’s a lot to come, first up is our CAD library with a cross-platform support, so you can find models for AutoCAD as well as SolidWorks, or whatever your preferred software. And we will not charge you for downloading the models - not now, not in the future. When we get the beta version going we will take things step by step. We'll continue developing our library (any feedback is more than welcome) and...

In my last post I mentioned the Q&A thread "Will CAD move to cloud" that I started in LinkedIn. It's still open and there are some great thoughts on the subject. Among other responses one particularly interesting link to an article was left by one of the commenters. The article is about CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing) and how task solving can be distributed to multiple computers. It's the same model that is used in cloud where multiple servers are fulfilling the orders from the clients. Current exception is that the the workstations are in one network but to the cloud there is only one...

There has been lots of buzz around CAD and cloud lately (in the future I hope to find more time to cover this subject) but not that much discussion around the financial shape of CAD software companies. Couple of days ago Dassault Systemes reported Q2 results for 2010 with strong EPS growth (earning per share). EPS growth of 82% reaching €0.40 (IFRS) and 57% reaching €0.58 (Non-IFRS) Reading these numbers it is easy to conclude that the recession that has clouded the CAD industry is over (or at least getting there). However, Vektorrum has dug deeper into the numbers and point out some interesting...

Couple of weeks ago Apple launched a web page with CAD drawings for iPods, iPad and iPhone. Geek heaven, right? Judging by the response of the internetosphere tons of designers, CAD engineers etc found it interesting enough (check out these cool overlays of the drawings vs. actual iPhone photos). Well, we're not satisfied with just drawings, we wanted the actual 3D CAD models. Couple of hours and 3 liters of Coke later we have them. Turns out that the original drawings weren't 100% accurate, small details missing etc. Anyhoo, check back in a week if check out the CAD models...

I'm a road cycling enthusiast and as every other biker out there I'm constantly fighting the desire to get one more bike, to upgrade this bit or that part, get a lighter wheelset, uniquely shaped handlebar, on and on the list goes. At one point one is not satisfied with what's available in the local store or on the internet any longer and they start designing their own stuff to get things just right. Perhaps it's a one-off time trial "rocket" or unique city cruiser bike for the girlfriend. I don't pretend to be Leonardo da Vinci but I can...

Just another day in the office. One birthday, one foosball match, our first whiteboard (not much on it yet), and Annie Nightingale pumping away over the sound system. Don't know where Hardi found her but apparently she's the quite special: Annie Nightingale is best known as Britain’s first female DJ on Radio 1. She is now the station’s longest serving broadcaster. She remains the only female DJ in the world to have been honoured with an MBE by The Queen. Tomorrow is the AC-finally-arriving day (the summer over here has been a scorcher), hurray! As to our baby, the most...
