GrabCAD recently had the opportunity to speak at the latest Design for Manufacturing Summit in Brooklyn. NY. The intimate setting of mostly small to medium companies in the design and manufacturing industries made for honest and interesting panels. It is clear to our team that the point of 3D content is to help designers and engineers get real work done and real products made. We were glad to be included in the discussion around 3D printing, scanning and modeling so we could share this message with others.
3D Printing, Scanning and Modeling
The companies represented in the 3D content panel (SpaceClaim, Adafruit, 40WestID, and GrabCAD) fielded questions centered around the impact of 3D printing and scanning on product creation.
- When will people be able to print with more material types?
- What happens to intellectual property when anyone can easily scan products in 3D?
- Is the quality affected with these new techniques?
Of course, none of the panelists were psychic, so we focused on what we know now. At GrabCAD we are CAD agnostic. It doesn't matter to us if you created your model in Solidworks or with a 3D scanner as along as that model is detailed and compatible with your needs. Did we connect you with the right models? Did we make it easier for you to communicate and work with your team? Those are the things that matter to us. The audience seemed happy to know that someone was looking out for them and at the big picture.
Getting Started in Manufacturing
The other panels covered how to get started in manufacturing and how to manage your design process. It was exciting to hear from companies like Maker's Row and Fabricating.com who are connecting product companies with manufacturers in a simple way. It was inspiring to hear how SparkFun makes manufacturing a custom and fun experience for you, no matter your size. A common theme throughout the event was the need for talented designers and engineers - we were happy to highlight our GrabCADrs and hope the connections we made at the event will bring you new and exciting opportunities to test your skills through our Open Engineering platform.
GrabCAD is Committed to Speed and Quality
What is the GrabCAD team taking away from this event? Small and medium companies need access to new ideas, talented professionals, and content that will make their design process move faster. We will continue to focus on building a Library that inspires and brings you relevant models. We will offer companies the chance to connect with you through your profile and Challenges so they can keep making great products and you get more work. And last but not least by any means, we will make it our mission to help you accelerate your design process - every day.
