If you're a professional Designer or Engineer, GrabCAD Workbench Beta is for you. GrabCADr Extraordinaire Tommy Mueller has been a tremendous asset to us by actively working with actual clients to bring their products to market quicker than before. Like what you see below, the first phase of creation of a new revolutionary shoe called Adaptive Footware™.
Edit: Tommy just made it public! You can see this project right here
Unlike your standard boot where the lining, the sole and outer shell are stitched together, Adaptive Footware™ consists of a stiff frame, sole and a separate 'Storm Socks'. All these parts are interchangeable - some Storm Socks for light hiking, other for colder weather. The idea was developed by Doug Smith to inject some greater versatility into the Footwear industry.
This is how Doug explained it,
This is a modular concept so multiple layers can be added or subtracted based on the environment. If one is wearing it in the city without the brace attached then a minimal foam liner is all that is required to cushion foot from hard carbon fiber shell. A soldier might have a foam liner with a ballistic layer built in. Rough expedition conditions might require a thermal liner with an additional stormsock for crossing icy water...[]...I envision an online store along with retail where one can buy many different booties and accessories to customize one's generic carbon fiber shell.
So far things are going swimmingly, despite the fact that Doug lives in Virginia and Tommy in Oregon. 3D is new to Doug - having an easy-to-use format makes for better communication between designer and client. While email could be used - organizing everything in coherent space means everyone is on the same page. Regardless if there are 2 (like this project) or 42 (like Solidworks City). Tommy explains it best "GrabCAD is our one-stop source for all of our design notes, links to manufacturing components, part models, design renderings, technical shop drawings, and more. We got more out of GrabCAD’s tools than we put into it."
