John Evans has beaten more than 4500 engineers by being among the very first who joined the GrabCAD in August last year. He's an Autodesk Inventor expert, writes about engineering and design for his Desing & Motion site and was happy to answer our Engineer Spotlight interview questions. GC: Tell us a bit about your background? How and where did your engineering career begin? John: Beginning - I started design and engineering (I'm still undergrad) at the age of three when my father stuck me in a RR turbofan. It scarred me for life. I just can't get them out...

You’ve all seen Little Nellie, the autogyro featured in the 1967 Bond movie You Only Live Twice. Q shipped it in a suitcase and assembled before use. German company AutoGyro is building the modern gyroplanes and they’re better than what Bond had. I met Ute Hoja, who is a member of the management board at AutoGyro, in Hannover Messe and she gladly agreed to tell us more about those not-so-common flying machines. Ute has been with AutoGyro since 1999 when the company was founded so she knows the machines and everything to do with gyroplanes intimately. Lauri: How and why...

The original Volkswagen Beetle is probably one of the most recognized cars in the world. It was in production from 1938 until 2003 and 21,529,464 were made over the 65 years. It’s the longest-running and most-manufactured automobile of a single design platform anywhere in the world. Beetle also has a cult-like following with thousands restoring old models, keeping them running, some using them as their daily rides, others rolling them out on nice sunny weekends for that leisurely drive down the winding country roads. Where am I going with all this? Couple of weeks ago we heard from Mark Burhop...

Instead of spending their time on repetitive routine drafting and file conversion let them work on product development and innovation. Leave the routing engineering tasks to GrabCAD. The beginning of 2011 has been great for GrabCAD and there have been some important changes that I wanted to share with you. Firstly, we want to welcome two new partners to GrabCAD - Seedcamp and TechStars. In January we annonced that we won Seedcamp London and just last week that we where chosen to TechStars Boston. Seedcamp is the most prestigious startup accelerator in Europe and it has helped us tremendously with connections back in the Europe and in the US, and also with setting up strategic partnerships. At the same time TechStars brings us the best mentors from...

After we updated our service forms a while ago, we’ve received some interesting queries for turning users' sketches into technical drawings, 3D magic, photorealistic images or all of the above. Sometimes working with drawn sketches can be rather time consuming, but other times the pencil drawings can be so well made that there's nothing else to do but be in awe and jealous of the talent. All this got us inspired this time to take a weekend look at sketching, with pencil, old school style. The example above was posted...

Current economic climate is tough on everyone - reduction in workforce means that engineers are buried in work, contractors and manufacturing companies are struggling to make ends meet and competition to win bids is higher than ever. Winning RFQs (request for quote) and increasing sales needs to be a smart combination of not spending too much time or money on putting the proposal together and standing out from the competition. We're looking for more NX engineers to complete client projects and earn money in the process.
