2015 Golden Gear awards

Since 2012 it’s been an annual tradition for GrabCAD to hold the Golden Gear Awards as a way of recognizing top contributors in the Community. These are people who, over the past year, embodied Community values, shared their amazing work and in the process, helped change the way people make things. As part of this celebration, members design trophies in the Trophy Challenge and we 3D print the winner for Golden Gear recipients. We want to thank each and every member who for every tutorial, comment, and CAD model shared, and for making GrabCAD the Community the place it is.

The new GrabCAD Library: connected, collaborative, customizable

GrabCAD has always been a community where engineers and designers can share their CAD models, find inspiration for new concepts, and download parts to advance their product design process. From day one, we have been driven by the curiosity and creativity that originally drew many of us to engineering. With that in mind, we have been hard at work on some huge improvements that make it easier than ever to discover amazing CAD models.

Engineers can’t (and shouldn’t) do everything

Too often the signature, defining trait that distinguishes the engineer from the masses is a relentless self-autonomous drive to repair, fix, tweak, and file everything entirely under their own power, never yielding even a minute measure of control to anyone. It’s a vast mystery where exactly the engineer derives this fierce bend towards complete autonomy.

NASA Challenge seeks fresh ideas for the ISS

GrabCAD is incredibly proud to host the Handrail Clamp Assembly Challenge with NASA. NASA has been investigating 3D printing technology in space for some time now and this Challenge is another great milestone. GrabCADrs are invited to submit fresh 3d printable handrail clamp ideas for the International Space Station (ISS). I asked Niki Werkheiser, In-space Manufacturing Project Manager at NASA to reveal a bit more about the the background of this Challenge.

Introducing GrabCAD Challenges for 2015

Today we launched our first GrabCAD Challenge of 2015. This challenge will help build a better solution for a self-service parcel delivery system. We chose this engineering problem to begin the year based on what members said we could do to improve the GrabCAD Challenge experience: solve real problems, help others, and build skills.  In 2015 we plan to do just that.

Wild West Off Road: Workbench Goes Ultra4 Racing

Dallas Lund and his father, Tim, run Wild West Off Road - a full-service shop that designs, builds, and fabricates parts for off-road racing and OEM vehicles. Tim manages the projects and runs the fabrication shop while Dallas works remotely and handles all of the design work. Remote work, CAD file sharing, and helping teams of engineers get the job done without the hassle of IT overhead and bothering the client with install requests? Sounds like a great Workbench use case to us. We caught up with Dallas last month and asked him what Wild West Off Road is all about and how Workbench makes life a little easier.
